Starting Mórrígan Devotion After 40: Why It’s Never Too Late
beginner devotions faq ritual Jun 18, 2025
One of our Morrigan Academy students, Mariette (a self confessed 52 yo), signed up for the free 5 Day Challenge on a whim. By day five she was reading a nightly prayer aloud, journaling her dreams, and marvelling at “how much I don’t know, yet”.
She's definitely not alone: mid-career parents, empty-nesters, retirees... the Great Queen keeps beckoning.
What holds us back from the Morrigan in mid-life?
I'm writing this today coz I hear three worries on repeat:
-
“Everyone else started as teens.” Actually, many who approach the Mórrígan after 40 bring richer life experience, stable routines, and the resilience the Goddess likes to test.
-
“My brain is too full for new lore.” You probably memorise passwords, kids’ birthdays, and your friend or partner’s coffee order daily. Mythic lines are easier - trust me.
-
“Will She even notice me?” Yes. The Mórrígan values sovereignty. Choosing to begin now is an act of it.
You're in good company in the Morrigan Academy
Internal data confirm that every single one of the Academy’s top ten lifetime students is over 40. Translation: late starters not only stick around, they thrive.
Add in YouTube analytics - 27 percent of watch/listen time comes from women aged 45-54 - and you get a clear picture: the Great Queen’s most committed devotees are people exactly like you.
First steps... Mórrígan rituals for beginners 40+
(and anyone else who wants them!)
1. Ten breath candle offering
Light a plain beeswax candle. On each exhale name a life lesson that forged you - divorce survived, children raised, grief endured. Fire turns memory into fuel.
2. Sovereignty walk
Choose one boundary you will defend this week. Maybe it's saying no to unpaid emotional labour. Maybe it's taking some solo time away from work or the family, phone switched off. Walk your neighbourhood while repeating: Is mise an ríoghnú (I am my own sovereignty, pron. iss MISH-eh on REE-oh-noo). Step, breath, claim.
3. Devotional journaling
Set a seven minute timer. Write a question for the Goddess (e.g. 'Where do you want me to grow?'), then free write. At the bell, underline phrases that feel like marching orders.
(Each of these fits inside a lunch break, no altar room required.)
Common obstacles and my quick fixes

---|---|
“I still feel like a beginner.” | Scholar vetted reading lists inside the Challenge keep TikTok nonsense at bay. |
“Time gets away from me.” | Use calendar prompts for an alarm to help you remember the Challenge; they land at whatever hour you choose. |
“I am afraid of cultural mis-steps.” | Every text here links directly to a cited Irish source, so you can trace the lineage. |
